In May of last year, former Detroit GM Dom Romano joined Columbus' management team as an Assistant GM. A couple of weeks later, former GM Hedrik left for Philadelphia and Romano was became the new GM. There were mixed reactions, and many just wanted stability, as Romano was the team's 3rd GM in less then 6 months.
Expectations were not great for this team, as many expected an even worse season then the one before. But Romano said something which at the time many saw as cliche, when he told everyone in his first press conference that he wanted this team to make it to the playoffs this year.
Here we are, almost a year later, and the Jackets are still playing hockey. While some might call them a Cinderella team, they could not be farther from the truth. Columbus was competitive from the beginning of the season, and for a short period of time, was 2nd overall in the West. This is a solid club from top to bottom.
In a thrilling fashion, in overtime none the less, a place were the Jackets won many games this year, the Jackets scored to win the 7th and deciding game against devision foe, Detroit.
"Its a great feeling, " said Captain Ohlund " We are excited for the next round".
The Jackets, only last year, were the 5th worst team. This year, they are 1 of 8 teams left with a chance to raise Lord's Stanley's Cup. What a difference a year makes.
