Hi Martin,
I wanted to ask a question about your interpretation of the goaltender restrictions and figured I'd ask it in the forum so everyone could see the answer and act accordingly.
The rule says goalies cannot play more than 72 games or 4320 minutes. Since the "games played" stat includes those games where a goaltender comes into the game in relief of another goalie, are we using the total minutes played to enforce the restriction or that GP stat?
Thanks!
Wayne

I was under the impression that it was an either/or type of scenario.
I had the same question last year. Every time I tried to rest Kiper his back up would blow up and he ended up playing the back half of many games. So when he reached 72 he had certainly not started that many.
It was explained to me that it would be too difficult to monitor each goaltender to keep track of games started vs. games played.
(But that was probably Hank being afraid to lose again to the Coyote juggernaut.)

Well, it seems like minutes would be the easiest, most accurate thing to track.. If it's more than 4320, then he's played more than 72 games (give or take a bit with overtime added in) and gets suspended until the end of the season. This way you eliminate that variable where your starter gets nicked for a game played even when you start your back-up instead. I'm about three games away from that.
That makes sense, since Cujo has received credit for 6 games (3-2-1 record) while Miller has received credit for 69. Pittsburgh has played 75 games this season, so it all adds up. It means Miller should get 3 more starts and Cujo gets 4, with 7 games remaining. The math all stands up.
If you just look at games played though, it says 70 for Miller and 11 for Cujo, for a total of 81. Obviously that's not right. The difference for Miller is only 1 game between the two methods, but it may be greater for other teams.
Either way, I've gotta start Cujo for more than half my remaining games while in a race for 2nd place.. It should be interesting!!

There an easy way to not have your starter play when you want to rest him: put the number of goals higher before your other guy is pulled (like to 8 or something).

The way to do it it's like Michel say When you do your lines: put the number of goals higher before your other guy is pulled (like to 8 or something). I had to play Halak instead of Lundqvist to prevent your situation.

The other option is to just not suck so much that you let in more than 5 goals a game suckers! Rick Flames GM

Montréal's Nabokov has played 73 games and isn't listed as suspended. What gives?

The way I see it, and sorry James , you should suspend Nabokov for the 1st game of the playoffs.

Final tally: 74 games for Nabokov. So 2 game suspension start of the playoffs?

The OttawaGM is right. Nabokov should be suspended the first 2 games of the playoffs.

Nothing like that will happen
If Nabokov went up to 74 it was because I havent suspended him in time. I had to suspend like 10 goalies and it wouldnt be fair to MTL if they had their goalie suspended in playoff
next year it might be an idea: every game played past 72 get you 1 suspension game in playoff

These rules are in place for a very legitimate reason, but it should be the GM's responsibility to monitor. Let the commish just check at the end of the season. A compromise on the Nabby issue might be to suspend him for two games at the start of next season and have those two games count towards his 72. I think a two game suspension in the playoffs is a bit harsh given its exacerbated impact (even the NHL weights poff suspensions differently than regular season suspensions.)
